You rock, Ms. Savannah! Glad to discover your excellent writing (about other excellent writing, in this case). What astonished me as I read your Charlotte’s Web article is how people can reflect deep compassion for the plight of animals and the horror of being killed, yet have starkly different reactions.

One person says, “Oh well, that’s life.”

Another person says, “No, this isn’t fair, life has to be better than this, we have to do something about this.”

I started down the vegan path at age 12 and am 27 now. If I had someone been swayed to be content with the situation at age 12, for all I know I might be in the “Oh well, that’s life” camp today. I’m grateful that I somehow persevered in my beliefs despite the social pressure.

Life has so many horrible things in it and we can’t fix it all, but we can certainly challenge ourselves to be more compassionate. I am lucky to be human and don’t want to be murdered, so I feel it’s my duty to try and prevent others from having to be.
