I Made a New Green Friend on the Bus (Short Story)
Written by a child at heart
Shy and nervous when I walk on, I normally sit in the last row where the wall has my back. Today was different though. I was the last kid on. I needed to sit fast before the bus wheels rolled, so I plopped near the front. Sitting next to me was my new friend.
The first thing I saw about her was she was bold for wearing the color green. With big amber eyes, she was a lot smaller than me and younger, I thought, which made me feel comfortable. But how did she feel?
Her strange backpack shone in the sunlight, warming her. As she drank a sip of water in silence, I was glad for her having everything she needed. Before, I would have thought that someone of her stature and style was annoying—a pipsqueak. Today, I looked at her in awe, and she looked back at me quizzically.
“Hi,” I told her.
My new green friend did not say anything to me back, but she did start shifting around and humming. She was looking out the window, so I started to look too.
Outside were others who reminded me of her. They seemed scruffy, but sturdy and strong, able to go far. We passed groups who were different shapes and sizes, and each I had seen as often in picture books as I had in real life.
